Cleveland Elementary Hosts Annual ESOL STEAM Camp

Nearly 50 students from across the county gathered at Cleveland Elementary to partake in the annual ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) summer program.Cleveland Elementary Hosts Annual ESOL STEAM Camp

Ranging from third grade through seventh grade, students had opportunities to explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) focused activities and lessons in order to enrich and strengthen their academic English language.

During the camp, students conducted stomp rocket challenges with Georgia Tech’s STEAM truck where student-designed paper rockets were launched. Each student team analyzed the rockets based on the flight performance and design.

Teachers offered students opportunities to program robots, code Beebots to dance, take virtual reality NearPod field trips, fly drones through various obstacle courses, and participate in the escape room challenge.

Four of Fayette County’s ESOL teachers, Christina Rufenancht, Emily Sparks, Susan Gillard, and Gabrielle Humphrey, organized and hosted the week-long event.

“We hope that this enrichment experience will send our ESOL students into the 2018-2019 school year equipped as leaders in their classrooms,” says Rufenacht.
