School Cafeterias Celebrate National School Lunch Week

The Fayette County Public School System will celebrate National School Lunch Week from October 15-19.School Cafeterias Celebrate National School Lunch Week

National School Lunch Week, founded in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, recognizes the National School Lunch Program, which serves healthy lunches to over 30 million children each day.

This year’s theme, “Lots to Love,” encourages students and school nutrition professionals across the country to share what they love most about school lunch programs.

In keeping with the theme, School Nutrition Director Kokeeta Wilder says, “We are giving our students more of what they love this school year.”

During National School Lunch Week, The Fayette County School Nutrition Program will provide an exciting week for students in the school system.

To kick off the week, the school nutrition program will offer students new menu items including the “Walking Taco” and the “Popcorn Chicken Bowl.”

Continuing the celebration, students will have the opportunity to win bicycles, movie tickets, and signed Atlanta Falcons merchandise, including footballs and mini helmets.

One lucky student will receive an autographed Atlanta Falcons jersey or football signed by Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

The federally-funded National School Lunch Program provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day. The program requires all schools to meet strict nutrition standards that limit calories, sodium, and unhealthy fats. School lunches must offer servings of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and 1% or fat-free milk. Well-balanced, healthy lunches give students the nutrition and energy they need to remain actively engaged in classroom learning.
