High school football season is over, but the Sandy Creek High School band, cheerleaders, orchestra and Air Force Junior ROTC have one more football game to attend this school year.
It is a game unlike any other, and it is special to Sandy Creek High because it will honor one of its own, 1st Lt. Robert William Collins. Collins, a 2004 graduate of the school, was killed in Mosul, Iraq in 2010.
A flag football game to honor the service and sacrifice of America’s disabled veterans will take place just days before the Super Bowl on January 30 at XL SportsWorld, an indoor arena in Fairburn. The Wounded Warrior Amputee Football Team (WWAFT) will take on former NFL players including Ron Jaworski, Herschel Walker, Michael Irvin, Hines Ward, Rocky Bleier, Jerry Kramer, Andrew Gardner, Brian Finneran, Chris Draft, Merril Hoge, and Charles Haley (and more than 25 other NFL stars TBA).
The WWAFT team is made of up service members who have served and are now using a prosthetic device to engage in everyday life activities. By showcasing their team on the football field, the WWAFT seeks to inspire its fans and highlight the perseverance of service members (both active and former) who continue to face life’s challenges without excuses. The team’s mission is to raise awareness and support for wounded warriors and their families.
There is a $20 donation entrance fee for adults; students and children get in for free. All proceeds will benefit the WWAFT and Kicking Kids Cancer foundations. Tickets can be purchased at www.eventbrite.com.
There will be a free autograph and photo opportunity with the players along with raffle prizes that include NFL autographed jerseys, helmets and footballs.
This will mark the WWAFT’s eighth straight Super Bowl. The team remains unbeaten, 19-0, having most recently defeated the Green Bay Packers alumni in front of 75,000 fans during halftime of the Packers-Dolphins November game on CBS at Lambeau Field.
