Two Fayette County elementary students took first place in the Griffin RESA Regional Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition, and their work will now advance to the state-level competition for another round of judging.Students Win Regional Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition

Kamari Moreland of Spring Hill Elementary and Kaydence Diner of Peeples Elementary won the regional competition in the fourth and fifth grade divisions, respectively. Their writing will be reviewed by a judging panel of English Language Arts professionals in consideration for a state award. Winners will be announced in May.

The Georgia Council of Teachers of English sponsors the writing contest. It is open to students in grades K-12, and includes all types of writing such as short stories, poetry, essays, research reports, and other forms. Unlike many writing competitions, this one does not provide a prompt to which students must respond, or provide any other boundaries to their genre choice or creativity, beyond a 1900-word limit.

The writing contest begins in each school with a school-wide competition. One winning entry is selected per grade level. Those entries result in a system level contest where one winner per grade level is selected for the county, and sent to the regional competition. Regional winners then compete against other regions at the state level, where, as in the previous competition rounds, one winner per grade level is selected.

The Griffin RESA region consists of school systems in Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding, and Upson counties.
