Some very special babies are receiving a comforting gift, thanks to the efforts of healthcare students at Whitewater High.
Approximately 34 of the school’s HOSA (Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America) students created over 150 no-sew fleece blankets that were delivered to Piedmont Fayette Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. Initially, the blankets will serve as covers for the unit’s special giraffe incubators to protect premature babies from the light. Later, when the babies leave the hospital, they will be discharged with the blanket along with a special note card from the student who created it.
HOSA advisor Julie Wolf said the idea was presented last fall to all advisors and their officers present at the Georgia HOSA Advisory Board meeting. Students worked on the blankets throughout the school year.
“The students referred to the project as a mission of love,” says Wolf.
HOSA is a national career and technical student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education.
The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality healthcare by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill, and leadership development of all health science technology education students; therefore, helping students to meet the needs of the healthcare community.
