Students at Sandy Creek High joined millions of other students around the globe by participating in the Hour of Code that took place during Computer Science Education Week December 9-15. 
The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code, to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science.
Even if students do not plan to pursue a computer science career, coding can help them build problem solving, logic and creativity skills, proficiencies that are needed for any occupation.
To help students get started with computer coding, Sandy Creek High is using CodeHS, a teaching platform that provides web-based curriculum, teacher tools and resources, and professional development. Bianca Ramchandani, a customer service manager with CodeHS, was at Sandy Creek on December 11 when students in Gary Liu’s and Melissa Turnipseed’s computer science classes took part in the Hour of Code activity. Ramchandani was impressed with what she witnessed.
“I had a great time running the Hour of Code with your students. Overall, it is very clear that they are passionate and excited to be learning computer science; thank you for everything you do for them,” she stated in an email to Liu and Turnipseed.
CodeHS is working with the school system to help expand its Computer Science K-12 pathway/programs; the Hour of Code is just one example of how that is happening.
