Fayette County Recognizes School Bus Safety Week

Fayette County Public Schools will celebrate National Bus Safety Week from October 19-23

National Bus Safety Week was started in 1963 by Dick Fischer, a long-time transportation consultant and a member of the National Association for Pupil Transportation.

Each year the association has a different theme; this year’s theme is "Red Lights Mean STOP!

This week is an opportunity for parents, students, teachers, and motorists to be informed about the importance of school bus safety.

To ensure the safety of our students, Fayette County has completed school bus safety evacuation drills; the first drill was held at the start of the school year, and another is scheduled for next semester.

Motorists are reminded that all lanes of traffic must come to a complete stop behind the school bus when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out. Vehicles traveling in the opposite lanes must also stop unless there is a concrete divider.

Remind children that if they drop something getting on and off the bus, they should never pick it up. Instead, they should tell the driver and follow the driver’s instructions.

Remembering these simple tips and rules will keep our children safe!
