Kedron students drawn to magnets around school

Kids at Kedron Elementary are discovering magnets are all around us. First grade scientists searched around the school for ordinary items that are magnetic.

As part of the magnets unit in science, students paired up and took a bar magnet, white board, and marker with them as they hunted around the school to see what everyday items we use are magnetic. By the end of the lesson they had a list of items in common areas they visit that are magnetic, and they were able to explain why they were or were not magnetic.

“I hope that students not only walk away with the knowledge of what an item needs to be magnetic, but also just how many items they use on a daily basis that are actually magnetic,” said 1st grade teacher Kori Perez. “We went to lots of places in the school that we use or visit on a daily basis, and they were identifying more items that were magnetic than not. They were surprised by a lot of things they were finding to be magnetic and would say, ‘Oh yep, this is made of metal!’”
