Records fall at state track meet

The victor’s podium was a familiar spot for local athletes at the GHSA Track & Field State Championships. 

State records were broken along the way at the meets split up over the weekend at multiple locations. Sandy Creek’s Chelsea Davis broke the Class 3A record in the triple jump, and Fayette County’s 4x800 relay team of Desmond Waters, Dustin Waters, Jaden Warner, and Justin Warner set a new Class 4A mark. 

At the Class 3A meet in Carrollton, it was a strong showing for Sandy Creek. The Lady Patriots finished as state runner-up, and the boys placed 10th overall. 

Leading the way in individual performances, Chelsea Davis won both the long jump and triple jump. Isis Symone Grant won the 400 meter dash and finished 2nd in the 800 meter. Bobbi Olive finished 2nd in the 200 meter dash. Noelle Boyd placed 3rd and Sky White placed 5th in the 300 meter hurdles. Janae Walker placed 5th in the shot put. 

The 4x400 relay team of Isis Symone Grant, Noelle Boyd, Bobbi Olive, and Empress Malone was victorious. 

On the boys side, Dalen Penson finished 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles, and Bryce Davis placed 5th in the high jump. 

The 4x100 meter relay team of John Phillips III, Zavion Green, Jordan Harris, and Cameron Watts placed 3rd. 

At the Class 4A meet in Albany, the Fayette County boys finished 5th overall, with the girls in 8th. 

In individual boys performances, Justin Warner placed 3rd and Jaden Warner placed 4th in the 400 meter dash. Dustin Waters placed 4th in the 800 meter. 

The 4x400 meter relay team of Kasahn Rivers, Justin Warner, Jaden Warner, and Justus Joseph was victorious. The 4x800 meter relay team of Dustin Waters, Justin Warner, Desmond Waters, and Jaden Warner was also victorious with a state-record run. The 4x200 meter relay team of Kasahn Rivers, Kai Jett, Justice Northern, and Justus Joseph placed 5th. 

On the girls side, Onoyeme Egure finished 2nd in the shot put. Nia Hence placed 5th in the 200 meter dash and 7th in the 100 meter dash.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Jhanya Chenault, Naomi White, Ariel Johnson, and Nia Hence placed 5th. The 4x200 meter relay team of Jhanya Chenault, Nicole Kutob, Naomi White, and Nia Hence placed 4th. 

At the Class 5A meet in Columbus, Starr’s Mill, Whitewater, and McIntosh made their marks. On the boys side, Starr’s Mill placed 4th overall with Whitewater in 7th. 

Starr’s Mill had a number of standouts among individual boys competitions. Marc Stampley finished 2nd in the 300 meter hurdles and 2nd in the long jump. Tito Alofe placed 4th in the high jump and 4th in the triple jump. David Bowers placed 3rd in the pole vault, and Josh Phifer placed 3rd in the discus. 

The 4x400 meter relay team of Miles Scott, Daniel Vetters, Jerrod White, and Nikita Jones placed 3rd. 

For Whitewater, Andrew Lipton placed 3rd in the 3200 meter, and Ademola Adewusi placed 4th in the 400 meter dash. Corey Richardson placed 5th in the 100 meter dash and 7th in the 200 meter dash. Nathan Wallace placed 5th in the 300 meter hurdles and 7th in the 110 meter hurdles. 

The 4x200 meter relay team of Ademola Adewusi, Nathan Wallace, Corey Richardson, and Jaylon McClendon placed 4th. 

On the girls side, McIntosh’s Oluchi Ugbajah placed 4th in the high jump.
