Spring Hill practices pet ownership

Pet Adoption Day at Spring Hill Elementary taught students in the MOID Access program how to be responsible and caring pet owners. As part of their monthly Pets theme, students from the three Adapted Curriculum classes practiced with a stuffed animal to call their own.

The children rotated through several centers. First, they picked out a name for their pet, then selected their pet from the pet kennel. Next, they rotated to the grooming station where they participated in a sensory bin filled with suds and plastic animals. The next station was feeding and caring for the pet with another sensory bin where they used different utensils to fill the food bowls. In the final station, students helped with a vet checkup of their pet.

At the completion of the activities, the children were awarded their pet along with an adoption certificate.

“This activity was an enormous fun learning experience for the children,” said teacher Winnie Mask. “It reinforced social emotional, daily living, fine motor, math, and literacy in a real world setting.”
