People’s University: Prouty shares knowledge at PTC Library

Peachtree City’s Director of Library Services Jill Prouty helps enrich the community.

Prouty attended JC Booth Middle and McIntosh High as her family moved to several stops around the country. The stars aligned for her first library job to be back here.

“I knew I wanted to come back to this area, and it was the first job I applied for,” she said. “It was almost like it was meant to be.”

The Peachtree City Library celebrated its 50th anniversary in October, and Prouty has been part of the team for 26 years. She stays on top of trends, ensuring the citizens have what they are looking for, regardless of her personal taste.

“This isn’t Jill’s library, it’s a public library. We need to offer a variety of viewpoints and a variety of material,” she said. “I take that responsibility seriously.”

Public libraries are called The People’s University, and Prouty relishes the opportunity to stoke lifelong learning in her community.

“The library is a place where everybody is welcome,” she said. “I can’t think of a better job where you basically show people all the things they can access for just a picture ID. Look at what you can check out.”

Even in a world becoming more disconnected from each other as we stay online, the library is still a beloved community resource. There are workshops and study spaces and activities for children, and, of course, lots of good books to read.

“I just love working at a place where we’re not selling anything and we’re trying to enrich people’s lives,” said Prouty. “The library is still a place where we can come together and share knowledge.”
