Students Take Top Prize in School Bus Safety Poster Contest

The 2017 National School Bus Safety week is October 16-20, but three Fayette County students are already looking ahead to next year’s event in the hopes that one of their poster designs will be chosen to promote the national campaign.Students Take Top Prize in School Bus Safety Poster Contest

Elementary and middle school students across the school system were invited to participate in the School Bus Safety Poster Contest sponsored by the Georgia Association of Pupil Transportation. A total of 88 posters were submitted for the county competition, with a first-place winner chosen in grades K-2 (Division I), 3-5 (Division II), and 6-8 (Division III). The winners are Lila McGee, second grade, of Kedron Elementary; Avni Aligeti, fifth grade, of Oak Grove Elementary; and Adeline Harper, sixth grade, of Rising Starr Middle.

These students’ artwork will be submitted to the Georgia Department of Education where they will be judged against others from throughout the state, with the first-place winners in each division advancing to the national competition. The judges will be looking for the relationship of the poster design to school bus safety practices, originality of the poster and how the idea is expressed in the design, and the visual impact of the poster design.

“We have three really strong and creative posters. I think we have a good chance at having state winners this year,” says Transportation Director Roxane Owen.

Students had to illustrate the theme, “My Driver – My Safety Hero,” using any type of media of their choosing. Posters were required to demonstrate proper school bus safety behaviors, and at least a part of a yellow school bus had to be present.

All posters that were submitted for the county competition will be framed and displayed inside the school system’s transportation building on Goza Road.
