Team Makes Top Five at State Science Olympiad

The only Fayette County high school team competing at the 2017 Georgia Science Olympiad took top honors at the competition, which included first place finishes in two events.Team Makes Top Five at State Science Olympiad

McIntosh High took fifth place overall at the Olympiad out of 24 teams competing from throughout the state. The competition consisted of 23 events spanning all areas of science.

The McIntosh team had two first place event finishes, one in the Disease Detectives and the other in Rocks and Minerals. Disease Detectives is a case study, paper-based competition that challenges students to apply the same scientific practices and methods, critical thinking, and reasoning skills used by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) detectives. Rocks and Minerals is an identification event in which teams use their knowledge of rocks and minerals to identify pictures/specimens and complete a written test.

Science Olympiad is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of science education and interest in science for students in grades K-12. Science Olympiad competitions are rigorous academic interscholastic science tournaments with events held across the United States.
