Possible Future Engineers Win Bridge Building Competition

Two elementary students constructed a suspension bridge that was long and strong enough for them to win the bridge building event at the Georgia Elementary Science Olympiad.Possible Future Engineers Win Bridge Building Competition

The team of Will McDonell and Evan Miller, both from Crabapple Lane Elementary, took first place and were declared champions of the event. They had just 45 minutes to construct a lengthy, strong, stable and reproducible suspension bridge from 50 plastic straws and masking tape. The bridge had to support a chalkboard eraser, placed in the center and at a right angle to the bridge, for a total of 10 seconds.

Elementary Science Olympiad is designed to encourage students to explore new and challenging ways of solving problems as part of a team by competing in events that focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). Teams from all over the state compete in regional events to qualify for a spot at the state tournament.
