Fayette County students were strong competitors in the Georgia Student Technology State Competition (GASTC), bringing home a total of 18 awards and earning 62 percent of the placements for the West Georgia Region.
Students earned an invitation to compete at the state level by placing first in the Georgia Student Technology West Georgia Regional competition.
The majority of the students earned first place honors, for a total of nine. Students placing first include (McIntosh High School) Katie Barry, 3-D Modeling; J.J. Wheeler, 3-D Modeling; Mike Zhang, Digital Game Design; Leigh Wheeler, Graphic Design; (Oak Grove Elementary School) Yashwin Ramesh Babu, Mobile Apps; Manish Gurugari and Parth Mahajan, Multimedia; and (Starr’s Mill High School) Ayaan Bakaly and Felipe Schwanties, Video Production. These students earned 90 percent of all of the first-place awards won by the West Georgia Region.
A total of six students placed second in the competition. They include (Flat Rock Middle School) Kyle Dyce, Game Design; (J.C. Booth Middle School) Ali Ermolaev and Lark Sisk, Digital Photo; (Oak Grove Elementary School) Saket Sonome, Audio Production; and (Peachtree City Elementary School) Jessica Yuan and Sara Hoti, Robotics. These students took 100 percent of all of the second-place awards won by the West Georgia Region.
Third place honors were won by (J.C. Booth Middle) Drew Lakly and Christian Clark, Programming Challenge; and (Starr’s Mill High School) Dorothy Daniel, Animation. These students received 23 percent of all of the third-place honors won by the West Georgia Region.
The Georgia Educational Student Technology Competition is an annual student technology competition produced by the Georgia Educational Technology Consortium. It is the highest level of student technology competition in Georgia with over 750 projects, representing the work of more than 1000 students, judged at the competition each March.
