Economics students at Sandy Creek High showed their strength in the knowledge of economic principals and their ability to apply problem-solving and critical thinking skills to real-world events by taking first place in the 2019 Georgia Economic Challenge.
The team of Alexis Valadez, Ariz Sayson, Anna Pate, and Michael Siler successfully defended their school’s championship title by claiming victory in the David Ricardo Division, a division for general economics students who are participating in the challenge for the first time. The announcement was made recently at an awards luncheon held at the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta.
At the competition, student teams use their knowledge, skills, and ability to work collaboratively to progress through multiple rounds that measure comprehension and application of concepts related to a rapidly changing global economy. Rounds cover microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and current global events. There is a total of three rounds: a critical thinking round, a quiz bowl round, and international round.
Sandy Creek economics teacher Steven Slocumb was the coach for this year’s competition.
