Students Receive High Honors on National Spanish Exams

A total of 100 students from McIntosh High, Starr’s Mill High, and Whitewater High schools earned medals for their scores on the 2019 National Spanish Examinations.Students Receive High Honors on National Spanish Exams

Out of those students, 16 from McIntosh High and Starr’s Mill High earned a gold medal, meaning that they scored in the 95th percentile or better. Those students are (McIntosh High) Amy Buckalew, Tyler Schmidt, Kotoe Takeda, Adelaide Barrett, Valeria Moncada, Zack Stone, Megan Uszynksi, Caroline Zhang, Mariela Jimenez Escobar, and Shi Ho Kim, (Starr’s Mill High) Heather Hernandez, Samantha Ludewig, Jacob Velez, Virginia Jackson, Kyle Robinson, Caleb Warnock.

To earn a silver medal, students had to score in the 85th to 94th percentile. A total of 37 students from McIntosh High, Starr’s Mill High and Whitewater High schools earned a silver medal. The breakdown by school: McIntosh (21), Starr’s Mill (14), Whitewater (2).

To earn a bronze medal, students had to score in the 74th to 84th percentile. A total of 47 students from McIntosh High, Starr’s Mill High and Whitewater High schools earned bronze medals: The breakdown by school: McIntosh (27), Starr’s Mill (15), Whitewater (5).

The National Spanish Examinations are the largest of their kind in the United States, making earning a medal very prestigious. Over 146,000 students participated in 2019. The exams are administered each year in grades six through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
