She has already been selected as the best history teacher in the state, and now Karrie Palmer at Crabapple Lane Elementary is vying for the top title in the nation.
Palmer has been named the 2019 Georgia History Teacher of the Year, an award presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to K-12 American history education. The award highlights the crucial importance of history education by honoring exceptional American history teachers from elementary through high school. The award honors one K-12 teacher from each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools, and U.S. Territories.
Palmer teaches fourth grade at Crabapple Lane where she is also a social studies curriculum teacher leader. A panel of teachers, administrators and scholars from Georgia selected Palmer for the award based on her achievements in American history education.
As the Georgia History Teacher of the Year, Palmer will receive a $1,000 stipend and Crabapple Lane Elementary will receive a core archive of American history books and Gilder Lehrman educational materials.
Palmer is also one of 53 finalists for the $10,000 National History Teacher of the Year Award. Ten finalists will be announced in late summer, and the winner of the national competition will be announced in early fall.
