Super subs: Bus drivers step up as substitute teachers

When students need help, bus drivers are always there to lend a hand. With Fayette County Public Schools in need of more substitute teachers, county school bus drivers are stepping up and stepping into the classroom.

Nearly two dozen drivers signed up for an information session to learn more about the opportunity to become substitute teachers in between their morning and afternoon bus routes. Cindy Robichaux, Substitute Services Specialist for Fayette County Public Schools, led an introduction to subbing and answered questions from the applicants.

A love of the kids in our school system was the common reason for the drivers to explore teaching.

“I enjoy being around the kids, the teachers, and the admins in the buildings, and I thought it was a way I could give back. It’s a way to give back when we really need it,” said one.

Another driver jumped in with more than a decade of experience as a childhood counselor.

“I have a passion for working with the students, and I just want to give back to the community and do what I can to influence the kids.”
