Different is amazing at Burch

At Robert J. Burch Elementary it is amazing to be unique where they follow the motto “Be different. Be you!”

School counselor Jessica Mull led 1st graders through reading a book called “A Little Bit Different” by Claire Alexander. The story shows a “ploofer” who is different from the other ploofers. At first, they said his differences were weird and they didn't like him, but in the end, because of one encouraging and kind word, he felt special and accepted.

“It is a very short and simple book, but it has a powerful message,” said Mull. “We should not only love and accept others because of their differences, we should also love and accept ourselves just as we are.”

Students discussed all kinds of differences that we have and how they make each of us special and unique. They were able to decorate their own ploofer however they liked, there were no guidelines. The students loved the activity and loved sharing their different and special designs with others.

Mull always looks forward to it as one of her favorite counseling lessons.

“I always ask the students why they thought we read that particular story, and they always know and understand the moral,” said Mull. “This is what I hope they take from it, that we are all a little bit different, and that is truly amazing!”
