The Patriots made their mark at the National History Day regional competition. The top three winners in each category move on to compete at the state level, and Sandy Creek will be represented in 11 categories.
Reginald Alexander, Morgan Bryant, Baotram Hoang, and Leyla Farmer won 1st place in Group Performance for their project “Frontiers in Psychological Warfare: The Vietnam War.”
Alan Godoy, Kai Whitaker, Doraliz Galaviz, and Melissa Villagomez won 1st place in Group Website for their project “Capture of “BTK” Creating New Frontiers in Forensic Genealogy.”
Noa Lomba won 1st place in Individual Website for the project “A New Frontier in the Cold War: Berlin.”
Celia Pena, Leslie Gomez, and Kiera Brown won 1st place in Group Exhibit for the project “Golden State Killer.”
They saw several other entries qualify for state: Jada Caruthers, Myla Morse, Courtney Lewis, and Skye Graham (3rd place in Group Website); Justin Moore (2nd place in Individual Website); Connor Bank (3rd place in Individual Website); Cahle Crumpler and Calla Hannah (3rd place in Group Exhibit); Zavion Green (2nd place in Individual Exhibit); Carlee Anderson (3rd place in Individual Exhibit); and Chelsea Persad (3rd place in Individual Documentary).
Sandy Creek High educators Patience Douglas, Sharon Lukiri, and Treon Penson assisted the students with their writing and research.
National History Day is a non-profit organization that offers year-long academic programs that engage middle and high school students in conducting and presenting original research on historical topics. Over the course of a school year, students select a topic related to the year’s theme. This year’s theme is “Frontiers in History: People, places, ideas.”
Students engage in a program of research, in both primary and secondary sources, designed to investigate their topic and answer specific research questions. Their results are then presented through a variety of categories including exhibits, papers, documentaries, websites, and performances.
