WBL Opens New Opportunities

Work Based Learning (WBL) provides an opportunity for students to develop a variety of skills by expanding the walls of classroom learning to include a structured work experience that is based on students' individual career goals/pathway. 

Work-Based Learning creates relevance and meaning for students by allowing them to apply the theory learned in the classroom to real-world settings.   Adult mentors offer guidance to help students develop problem solving skills, learn to work in teams, and meet the high standards of today's employers.

Why Work-Based Learning?

Today’s students face a number of new challenges in the future as young working adults. Many of these changes will be fueled by technological advances now prevalent in the business community. Fayette County’s Work-Based Learning and Apprenticeship Programs offer students an opportunity to gain skills in a workplace setting to enhance the student’s academic and future career goals. This valuable experience will better prepare students as they move directly into the workplace or continue their education at the post-secondary level.

Employers aid the students’ education by assessing performance, creating relevant curriculum, and developing occupational skill standards specific to business and industry. No matter a student’s plans for the future, the Fayette County Work-Based Learning Program offers real world experience that will benefit students.

WBL Student Application Process

APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR FALL SEMESTER 2024:   March 14, 2024

Complete the following application process:

1. WBL Application Form -  fully complete, print, and submit the form to your school's guidance office
   
   
   • IMPORTANT: The application is a fillable .pdf form, so students can type answers into the boxes on the form. The form will not allow you to save your answers, so make sure to print your document before you close it or your information will be lost.  You can also choose to print the blank form and fill it out by hand (must be legible).  If you do not have access to a printer, contact the WBL Coordinator (contact info below) for a printed form. 
     
     
   • Submit a printed copy of the application to your Counselor or send an electronic copy to duncan.melanie@fcboe.org.  
     
     
2. Resume - Submit an electronic copy to  duncan.melanie@fcboe.org. In the subject line include: "First Name Last Name Resume".
   
   
3. 3 Online Teacher Recommendations
   
   
   • Students should e-mail the selected teachers and provide them with a link to the online Work Based Learning Teacher Recommendation Form.
      
     • Teachers must be logged into their FCBOE Google account to fill in the recommendation form.
       
       
   • It is the student’s responsibility to request the recommendations from their selected teachers and to follow up to insure the recommendations have been submitted prior to the application deadline.
