Oak Grove job site studies volume

It was a productive day on the job site for the Braves. As a culminating activity for their volume study, Oak Grove Elementary 5th graders put on their hard hats and calculated dimensions of different containers.

Students were placed in crews, then each crew measured the dimensions of various boxes and calculated the volume of each box.

Teacher Natalie Whitson likes the activity as a creative way to tackle new concepts.

“I hope students had fun engaging in math with their peers,” said Whitson. “I also hope they were able to apply their classroom knowledge to a real life task and learn how to use tools to measure the dimensions of rectangular prisms (boxes) and calculate volume in a real-life situations.”
