Flat Rock repeats as girls basketball champs

The Eagles are still the best. Flat Rock beat Rising Starr 54-31 to win their second-straight county middle school girls basketball championship.

The title also caps off a second undefeated season in a row.

“It was an incredible feeling winning the title again this year,” said coach Cole Jackson. “Because we won the title last year, it was a challenge this season as we felt we had a target on our backs. We had to maintain focus and keep our eyes on the prize in order to thwart every team's attempt at beating us. While there were a few close games, we really came together and played extremely well down the stretch and into the playoffs.”

The champion Eagles are Jaylah Jones, Malea Bridges, Morghan Reckley, McKenzie Stevenson, Gabby Johnson, Janay Latimer, Raquel Walker, Lauryn Ferguson, Destin Qualls, JaNaiya Phillips, Sariah Green, Kylah Green, Kandyce Hopkins, and Lauren Bliss. The team managers are Kaylee Thompson and Malayna Reckley.

They are coached by Cole Jackson.

“This team was so special because they were battle-tested and maintained unique chemistry on and off the court. These girls were a family and had learned to be resilient on the court and there was very little that would rattle them,” said Jackson. “Many of my players from this year were 7th graders on our championship team last year so they had been playing together for a while now, and, if we ever faced adversity on the court, they were able to come together, rally, and ultimately win the game. Most of the girls on the team finished with a perfect record of 28-0 at Flat Rock which is extremely special.”
