    The Kedron Media Center supports Kedron Elementary’s mission and vision by developing and inspiring a culture of reading and inquiry.  We promote literacy and accessibility of information for enjoyment, academic support, and personal growth.  The Media Center is a central  and integral hub for students and staff.  Not only do we provide a robust media collection, we also oversee the Accelerated Reader and Beanstack programs.  Media lessons include book care, research tools, media literacy, story time, and special events.  If you have any needs or would like to discuss ways to support the Media Center, please contact Mrs. Hornung at hornung.cassandra@fcboe.org.

    Book Checkout:

    The Kedron Media Center is open and flexible for students to check out materials with classes and individually.  Books are checked out for a period of up to three weeks.  Students are expected to take care of materials and return them in good condition. Library bags are given to PreK-1st grade students to help keep track of books in their backpack and provide a layer of protection for the books from possible damage.

     

    Books that are lost or damaged will incur a replacement fee so that a new library-bound copy of the title can be purchased.  If a student has overdue books or outstanding fees, they will not be able to check out new materials until books have been returned or fees have been satisfied. 

     

    Accelerated Reader Program:

    The Accelerated Reader Program (AR) is an important facet of the media literacy program at Kedron for students in first through fifth grades. At the beginning of the year, students take a reading assessment to help determine their reading level.  Using the scores from the reading assessment, the teacher then conferences with each student to establish a year-long goal for the student defined in points. Students will select books, read the book at their own pace, and then take a short computerized quiz on that book. Books have an AR point value assigned to them with the more difficult books worth more points.  As students read and test, they will accumulate points. They are recognized at three different intervals during the journey to their goal. When students achieve their year-long goal, they are invited to appear on WKKB, our morning news broadcast, to be recognized by the whole school.

     

    AR testing can only be done at school. Your student will be given opportunities in the classroom to test. Parents of new students and first graders will be receiving a Renaissance Home Connect letter that is unique to your child as it contains a username and password for him/her. I encourage you to sign up for the emails that are sent when your student tests. The email will tell you the title of the book, percentage correct, and points earned. This will allow you to help your child stay on track to reach his/her goal by early May.
