Oak Grove’s McKnight nominated for Hidden Heroes

Virgil McKnight is a legend at Oak Grove Elementary, and his Brave community wants him to earn a big honor. McKnight, head custodian at Oak Grove, is nominated for the Hidden Heroes: Honoring Leaders Worth Imitating campaign hosted by the Georgia Leadership Institute on School Improvement (GLISI).

McKnight is an original staff member from when the school opened in 1985.

“Not only is he a hero, he is also an icon. Former students will frequently ask if Mr. McKnight is still at Oak Grove, and he continues to demonstrate commitment, perseverance, and pride,” said the nomination.

For nearly 40 years, McKnight has keep the school running smoothly and looking beautiful.

“Mr. McKnight is always willing to step in to help our youngest students. He watches to see if our littles need help at lunch by opening milk cartons and keeps their playground free of ants and pests. While doing any task he always shares a smile, laugh and kind words.”

He goes beyond, working behind the scenes to support students, staff, and families. He helps with the breakfast program, comes in on weekends and holidays to water plants, helps with special events, and walks upset students to class.

Each year the GLISI opens the campaign to highlight education leaders who may not receive the recognition they deserve for their tireless work. Voting is open now, and the entries with the most votes receive cash prizes and will be featured across GLISI's social media.
