Whitewater capped off a remarkable season, beating Bennett’s Mill 54-38 to win the county middle school boys basketball championship.
The Wildcats built up a commanding 35-12 halftime lead and never trailed. Winning the title was a relief for a squad with sky-high expectations.
“I knew we had the team to win it all, but sometimes team chemistry can break down over the course of a season. Ours did not,” said coach Steve Hutchinson. “The camaraderie and selflessness of the team (was special). Not only did they have a high basketball IQ, they really operated like a true team. They were really fun to watch.”
It was a history-making season for the Wildcats. This is only the third basketball championship in the 34-year history of Whitewater Middle, and it is the first time they have ever completed an undefeated season.
The win was keyed by 23 points from team MVP Case Roberts.
“What I love about Case is that, when I ask him how many points he scored the night before, he doesn't know because his goal is winning and not his individual stats,” said Hutchinson. “He is a true team player who knows how to elevate the players around him.”
The champion Wildcats are Braylon Bolton, Chase Davenport, Luke Gratzer, Maddox Gardner, Rylan Laney, Brandon LeMay, Malcolm Marks, Holden McCoy, Case Roberts, Darren Taylor, and Ty Vazquez. The team manager is Willie Hicks.
They are coached by Dr. Steve Hutchinson.
“I am extremely grateful. Grateful to be able to coach such a fine group of young men,” said Hutchinson. “They really are a special group.”
