Divine 9 car line builds community at Burch
The morning car rider line at Robert J. Burch Elementary was divine as members of the Divine 9 Fraternities and Sororities greeted the young Bears.
The Divine 9 represents five fraternities and four sororities which were originally established in Historically Black Colleges and Universities to combat racial inequities for African American scholars. Each organization has a common goal of educating, uplifting, and serving the community.
As part of Black History month, the school wanted to bring awareness to the service organizations and how they help their communities. Started last year, PTO President Tomia Hines was a leading force behind the initiative. The Bears were able to grow it further this year, with 8 of 9 organizations represented. The goal is to expand it again next year to include both Flat Rock Middle and Sandy Creek High.
“It is our hope that kids are educated about each of the Divine 9 organizations and their commitment to lifelong service,” said teacher Kela Mason. “Seeing the parents dressed in their greek apparel was truly a highlight for many of our scholars. We want them to see that these wonderful opportunities to serve their community await them in their future.”
