Ben Starkey and Ethane Craft received a “Best in Show” award, meaning their projects scored a perfect 100. Shelby Stratton, Spencer Fuqua, Breanna Christen, Braden Newcomer, Drew Toro, John Bishop, Jacob Spurlock, and Brandon Pupo each received an “Outstanding” award.

All 10 students are in Dr. Tom Lewis’ literature class at Whitewater High. The student productions were digital storytelling projects that came out of a workshop conducted by the Woodruff Arts Center through an alliance between the arts center and the school system. Students worked in class with a guest artist for seven sessions learning about the art of storytelling. They were asked to create a digital story about a personal experience, comparing it to the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

The students used iPads and the iMovie app to make their productions that consisted of different digital media forms such as sequential stills, animation, and live action. The content of the stories varied from struggles with illnesses, to travels, and a dream of working in the film industry.
