    Dr. Jonathan S. Patterson was named superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools on August 24, 2020. He brings to this new role over two decades of education experience, a commitment to leadership development and community engagement at all levels, and a firm belief that all students can succeed with the right support.

    He is an experienced leader with deep knowledge and expertise in the business of teaching and learning. Dr. Patterson is a person of honesty, integrity and trust, and appreciates the experience of others and the value they bring to the decision-making process.

    A lifelong native of metro Atlanta, Dr. Patterson began his tenure in education 25 years ago with Gwinnett County Public Schools as a high school biology, chemistry and physics teacher. With a passion for leadership and a relentless pursuit of excellence, he quickly rose through the ranks of the school system as an assistant principal, principal, area assistant superintendent, and most recently as associate superintendent for curriculum and instructional support.

    Dr. Patterson earned his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Mercer University and a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Georgia. He holds a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology, both from West Georgia College.

    He and his wife, Shannon, a middle school teacher, are the proud parents of two young men: Davis, a high school junior, and Bradley, a college junior.
