Huddleston Gets a Taste of Fall

With fall season in full swing, the Fayette County School Nutrition Program visited Huddleston Elementary to conduct a pumpkin presentation.Huddleston Gets a Taste of Fall

This year Deirdre Fulton’s kindergarten class was selected to participate in a pumpkin presentation as well as some pumpkin taste testing.

During the presentation, students learned about different pumpkin nutritional facts, such as the high calcium and potassium levels. Also, they learned that pumpkins are good for your heart, cholesterol, and skin.

Students were able to talk about different foods that contain pumpkin. Christina Martin of the Fayette County School Nutrition Program said, “They enjoyed this part a lot with the different ideas they had.”

After reading a Bernstein Bears book about pumpkins, students were given the opportunity to touch the inside of a pumpkin and try some pumpkin seeds. Each child received a little cup of seeds, prepared by Annette MacEachern, the school nutrition manager for Huddleston.

While some children enjoyed the seeds and others did not, this presentation was an opportunity for students to explore and learn more about pumpkins.

Thirty mini pumpkins were donated from Royal Produce and each child in Fulton’s class received a pumpkin to take home.
