Foreign language students across all five high schools and Flat Rock Middle School accounted for nearly 40 percent of the 196 total placements earned at Clemson University’s 45th annual Poetry Declamation Contest.
Fayette county students earned 30 first place, 25 second place, and 17 third place awards for a total of 72 placements overall.
Additionally, the students had four sweeps, taking first through third place in one category of German and three categories of Spanish.
Presented by Clemson's Department of Foreign Languages, the poetry declamation contest gives students the opportunity to perform poetry in their language of study and receive feedback from leading language educators. Participants perform two poems from memory, specified according to students' level of language study. They are evaluated based on pronunciation, interpretation of text, smoothness of delivery, and textural accuracy.
