Counselor Named ACTE National School Counselor of the Year

A Fayette County high school counselor has been named the national 2018 Career Guidance Counselor of the Year by the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), the nation’s largest not-for-profit association committed to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for successful careers.Counselor Named ACTE National School Counselor of the Year

Sharon Barrow, an 11th grade counselor at Sandy Creek High, learned that she had won the national title during the ACTE CareerTech VISION 2017 conference awards banquet on December 6. The award recognizes school counselors and career development professionals who have demonstrated commitment to connecting students with opportunities for success, shown innovation in career exploration and development, and have advocated for Career Tech Education as a viable option for all students.

Barrow was one of four finalists up for the award. The other finalists were from Minnesota, Texas and Arizona.

Before joining the faculty at Sandy Creek High this year, Barrow worked for the Ware County School System in Waycross, Georgia where she is credited with introducing a number of innovative programs focused on career counseling that helped shift the paradigm of school counselors’ roles and the preconceived notions of CTE students.
