School System’s Only Show Choir Wins Competition

Their show stopping performance catapulted the Fayette County Public School System’s only show choir to number one at the annual Oak Mountain Invitational in Alabama.School System’s Only Show Choir Wins Competition

The Flat Rock Eagle Show Choir at Flat Rock Middle captured first place in the Novice division of the competition. This was the choir’s second time at the invitational, having earned third place for their performance last year.

Earning the first place spot was no easy feat for the Eagles. The choir was up against some tough competition from the start, but a technical glitch in the middle of their show could have derailed what was a perfect performance up to that point. It took the sound technician nearly six minutes to get their correct track, with the students holding their poses the entire time.

“They took what could have been a whopping blow to the routine and turned it into their triumph,” says choral director Dana Lamb-Schaubroeck.

The choir scored perfect 10’s in tone, intonation, vocal quality, and overall effect, outperforming some very talented choirs, including one from a school for the performing arts.

As if having a perfect performance was not enough, Tarrell Davison won the overall contest for Best Solo Male. He beat middle and high school boys from many states in the southeast to get the award, with the judges calling his performance “flawless.”

The Flat Rock Show Eagles performed songs from New York to Paris and wrapped it up with “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” The entire show was choreographed by Sandy Creek High student Molly Pate, who is a former Flat Rock Eagle.

This marks the third year of competition for the Flat Rock Show Eagles and their fourth trophy. They earned first place in 2016 at the Southern Star Competition, in 2017 they took second place at the same competition, and also in 2017 they finished third at the Oak Mountain Invitational.
