Eligible High School Students Encouraged to Register to Vote

Young adults in Fayette County understand the importance of being engaged participants in our democracy. They learn about their civic duty through their government high school classes, and most of them register to vote and become active voters as soon as they are eligible.

The last day to register to vote in Georgia is Monday, October 5. High school students who are 17 ½ years old can register, but persons must be 18 years old to vote. Registration can be completed online through the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, www.sos.ga.gov.

The Secretary of State’s Office has a webpage dedicated to high school students, iVote Student’s Corner, that provides them with information on registering to vote. Fayette County Public School students can also ask their government teachers about voter registration.

According to the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office, as of September 1, 2020, Fayette County has 11,179 active registered voters aged 18-24, making up 12 percent of the total active registered voter population.
