Innovation and ingenuity was in the air at the Fayette County Elementary Science Olympiad.
Emerging from a healthy competition, the Stars of Braelinn Elementary claimed 1st place. Top squads receive an invitation to the Georgia Elementary Science Olympiad competition to be held on the campus of Kennesaw State in May.
Science Olympiad is a hands-on, fun science event where students compete in science activities throughout the day. Winning at Science Olympiad is all about teamwork and practice. Teams are composed of up to 20 3rd through 6th grade students, and they are required to practice at least one hour per week either before or after school. There is a wide variety of competitive events like “Bridge Building,” “Date Crunchers,” “Disease Detectives,” “Paper Rockets,” and “Egg Drop” that students must complete in order to advance through the competition.
Other school teams finishing in the top six at the Fayette County Science Olympiad include Huddleston in 2nd place, Oak Grove in 3rd place, Kedron in 4th place, Sara Harp Minter and Crabapple Lane in a 5th place tie, and Peachtree City Elementary in 6th.
