Poetry reciters, ready writers win at regional festival

The winner’s podium was filled with local faces at the 2023 Griffin RESA Regional Literacy Days competition for middle schoolers.

Clayton Mayfield of Whitewater Middle won for 6th grade poetry recitation. Karmari Moreland placed 2nd for 8th graders.

Allie Kemp of Rising Starr Middle won for 8th grade ready writing. Zehra Sorrow of Whitewater Middle placed 2nd for 6th graders, and Avery Lindseth placed 2nd for 7th graders.

For poetry recitation, students are judged on stage presence, articulation, interpretation, difficulty of piece, and memory and accuracy. They can earn extra points for fluency, gestures and expression.

Ready writers are given a prompt and are asked to write on the spot without any prior preparation. Students have one hour to complete their piece, which is judged on ideas, organization, and style.

The Griffin RESA Regional Literacy Days Festival includes students from the school systems of Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding, and Upson counties.
