People’s Law School brings courthouse to the community

The People’s Law School is helping people. In cooperation with Fayette County Public Schools, the free four-week session hosted by State Court Judge Jason Thompson was an opportunity to get to know the legal system from local experts.

The annual event is not law school or legal advice, but it gathers professionals from a wide variety of disciplines to share their expertise with the community.

Guest speakers this year included Rick Lindsey (business law), Cindy Liebes (common scams), Alisha Thompson (juvenile court), Feranda Hotel (immigration law), Phil Coe (family law), David Ballard (criminal law), Vernon Smith (criminal law), Hilliard Castilla (civil litigation), and Jordan Jewkes (civil litigation).

Judge Thompson presented an overview of the judicial system, as well as a discussion of our local accountability courts, the Veterans Treatment Court and DUI/Drug Court.

The class is open to all ages, and this year’s participants ranged from students to retirees.

“Each year, this is part of our outreach to bring the courthouse to the community,” said Judge Thompson.
