When Fayette County school nurses learned Angela McCluhan needed basic necessities for wounded soldiers overseas, nurses across the county came together to lend a helping hand.
Apart from being a substitute nurse for Fayette County for over eight years, McCluhan is also an Air Force medic. With a total of sixteen years, seven years active duty and nine years in the reserves, she has had the opportunity to care for injured and ill military members.
To help Angela continue in her efforts to support wounded soldiers, Debbie King, coordinator of School Health Services, and the Fayette County school nurses partnered with the Fayette County American Legion to collect items to create care packages for these brave men and women.
Items included blankets, plastic pillow case covers, coffee and creamers, hot sauce, snack items, shower curtains, shower shoes, socks, underwear, shorts, t-shirts, hygiene items, cooling cloths, laundry pods and dryer sheets, and electrolyte powder.
Over 500 soldiers benefited from the 12 care packages, which were sent to McCluhan during her deployment in Al Udeid AB, Qatar.
“The Airmen, soldiers, sailors, and marines were extremely grateful and surprised by the kindness from strangers. They don’t take anything for granted and truly appreciated everything received,” says McCluhan.
Now back in the United States, McCluhan states, “I am grateful to the Air Force for allowing me this opportunity to give back and take care of the true hero’s of our great nation.”
With the continued donations and support from the community and the Fayette County school nurses McCluhan is ready to go back and carry forward her responsibilities as an Air Force medic.
